Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Why are our competitors prices lower than ours? A : Pricing will vary from shop to shop and one that is new to the industry compared to an experienced shop. I have been installing paint protection film since the early 2000's and used over a dozen different films. I work one-on-one with each of my clients to tailor-fit their coverage requirements. A tailor-fit installation means pattern adjustments and requires certain parts like the grill, lights, plastic trim, emblems, bumper, etc. to be removed so the film can tuck without any exposed edges. This requires additional time, and more importantly, a skilled professional to remove/replace these parts back to the factory standards. We truly believe you get what you pay for.
Our prices are based on the use of an experienced installer/shop owner, use of premium industry proven films with professional pattern designs, job complexity, computer & installation time spent to customize your pattern, fair labor costs and attention to details. Many shops do installations part time - detail/polish/wax/sealant/ceramic coat vehicles, install tint etc. and rely on limited experience non-certified installers, low pricing to attract customers, may use least expensive materials and " do-it-yourself" kits or razor cut the pattern directly on your vehicle. We focus to provide the highest degree of installation excellence; thus, our pricing structure reflects this and therefore we do not price-match. "Always price clear bra installations separated from other offered services."
Q: Why is there a difference in cost between installation facilities? A : There are seven (7) factors which affect the overall cost of a paint protection film installation: experience, pattern design, coverage, installation location, insurance, film. Consider all these issues when deciding on an installation shop.
1. Expertise: The installation of paint protection films is a trade; through experience and training you gain the knowledge and understanding on how to install kits properly. A Certified Installer - is a professional craft/trade - it installed as a sideline business. These installers have been trained and approved by film/design houses, they have a full understanding of the pattern design criteria and how it is intended to fit and look on each respective vehicle. Each pattern design house has nuances and a Certified Installer has a full understanding of design criteria which will make for a better installation and fitment.
2. Pattern Design: There are over fifteen (15) pattern companies on the market so compare apples to apples on your pattern coverage’s. Many of the companies offer free patterns, many of these patterns do not fit properly or are piece-meal (numerous parts for ease installation at the expense of looks). These patterns can involve trimming and cutting on the vehicle due to poor design or lack of installation expertise. This leads to poor coverage (protection). Many of these patterns are great for the entry level installer at the sacrifice of the client’s coverage and fitment. Many new installers entering the market trying to supplement their income use free patterns rather than investing in top of the line pattern design company(s). Do it yourself (D.I.Y) patterns can be found on the Internet and are meant for the do-it-yourself-er not the professional installer. These patterns:
3. Coverage: Understand how much coverage (protection) is being offered? Is the bumper coverage fender to fender or pure frontal coverage? Is the hood really protected in the right places? How much film is installed on the hood? Are there optional coverage patterns for the hood, fenders, bumpers, a-pillars, rockers, splash areas, roof, etc? Does the shop offer wrapped edge lines and let you know where this can be done. Does the shop offer removal or emblems, headlight washers, headlights, blinkers; tow hook covers, and grills etc. so the edges can be wrapped so there is no visual edges around these components?
4. Installation location: Shop location makes for consistent, cleaner conditions and installations. Do you want your installation in a open garage, dirty body shop bay or a dusty/sandy garage with poor lighting? These locations can lead to greater probability of excess debris under the film and poor installations. We do installations in our certified climate controlled with a JDS Air Tech HP Air Filtration at 99% 5 micron, 91% 1 micron installation facility with lighting brightness equal to a hockey rink and a vehicle lift so we are not installing your kit at the ground level where there is lots of the sand and debris. We also install wheel covers for an additional level of debris protection. This allows us to install paint protection films virtually debris free leading to cleaner installations.
5. Type of Film Used: How you drive, your local climate, paint color, paint surface texture and budget will affect film choice. Some films perform better in one climate than another. The vehicle's' paint texture may lend itself to a specific film choice. We will work to determine the best film for your needs. We always recommend the use of Premium"Self Healing" Films.
6. Clearshield Protection Services did not start as a detailing paint correction business not a window tint shop...we only install film. Any additional services we subcontract to professional detailing and window tint shops and work to make all the services seamless to the client.
Clearshield Protection is a Specialty Company. One of the key benefits of a specialty store is its focus on a single class of products - paint protection and vinyl. This gives owners and employees a chance to develop expertise, installation skills and a reputation for knowledge. Removal of Components: A reputable shop will remove badges etc. prior to the installation process.. This leads to a cleaner installation and reduces the chances of debris buildup under the film.
Q: What is the difference in tier one paint protection films and should I use one vs the other? A: LLumar/SunTek, XPEL or 3M are all tier one films with a ten (10) year manufacturer warranty. I have used Suntek, llumar, Nano Fusion, 3M films over my 20 years of doing installations. LLumar Platinum Paint Protection Film and SunTek Ultra are actually the same film in composition, just sold under two different brands. Both companies are owned by Eastman Chemicals, and both LLumar and SunTek are big players in the window tint industry in addition to Paint Protection Film. It’s argued that the LLumar Platinum and SunTek Ultra films have greater clarity and enable a higher-gloss finish than other films on the market. That may be the case, but there is certainly not a dramatic difference in the finish between LLumar / SunTek and XPEL or 3M, so don’t make that the deciding factor in which film you choose.
A Paint Protection Film is only as good as its installer. Period, end of story. You could have the best film in the world, but if it is installed poorly, such that it blisters, bubbles, and peels prematurely, it won’t do you any good. Now, no installation is 100% flawless, but there is a big difference between a professional, quality install and one that’s done quickly and carelessly. So make sure you use a reputable experienced PPF installer near you, consider how invested they are in the industry, credentials, training, take a look at the work they’ve done, ask around at car shows etc. and read the reviews they’ve received, and once you’ve found someone you can trust, ask them what film they enjoy installing the most.
Q: Can you de-mystify and provide a background on Paint Protection Dealer Locators? A : All paint protection manufacturers have a dealer locator to inform the customer who is installing their film- this is a misnomer. Manufacturers have requirements for the shop to purchase a certain dollar amount of their film per month/per year and many manufacturers want the shop to only use their film exclusively. Many customers asked “I did not see you on the dealer locator, are you able to install this particular film on my vehicle? Can you still offer a warranty?” The answer is YES and YES! The manufacturers want installer shops (purchasing only their film) to be on their dealer locators, which mean smaller lower volume shops usually are not listed. We can debate this philosophy and see where the future leads in this competitive market. Shops placed on manufacturers’ dealer locator do not guarantee you will get a quality installation, it just means that the shop uses only one exclusive film. Over the past 20 so years I have installed 3M Gen3 and latest Pro Series, Nano Fusion, Avery, Stek, XPEL, Suntek ,LLumar Platinum (also sold as Suntek Ultra), and Legend films. All these films are tier one with great warranties.
Q: What is estimated price range for Paint Protection Film? A : These prices are a range and will vary based on the following: vehicle make & model, difficulty level, expertise, materials, regional location, pattern dimensional adjustments, degree of edge wrap, surfaces protected: painted, chrome or piano black parts and any emblem removal/reinstall or vehicle disassembly required.
Q: What is Paint Protection Film? A : Paint Protection film when properly applied to the car's painted surface you will have a protection against rocks, road debris and bug splats keeping the paint underneath the film protected. An additional bonus is the material is nearly invisible protection does not change the look of your vehicle, like an ugly black vinyl bra or an "old school" bug deflector. Please remember this is Paint Protection, not Paint Perfection. There may be minute flaws in the film, or a speck of dust, sand grain, hair etc. that found its way under the film, or flaws/pecks or paint chips in the paint that you didn’t notice previously and are magnified under the Paint Protection film. We take all precautions, nylon shirts, HEPA air cleaning system, wash and maintain bay cleanliness and lint roll our clothes prior to installation. Many times the flaw is unnoticed until the film is set. We have, on many occasions during installation and lifted the film and removed the flaw or replaced the film; this does not mean the installation will be perfect. “We strive for perfection, but perfection is not real. We are human. For example, Your car has imperfections from the factory. I will do my absolute best, and that’s all I have to offer, if that’s not enough for you, you may need to find someone else”. We are sure you will appreciate our high attention to detail, care and we, in turn, appreciate your reasonableness.

- Do you want an installer who does installations on a part-time basis? You want full time installers with over 19 years of clear bra expertise.
- Do you want a detailing shop, tint or sign shop installing your clear bra? You want a dedicated shop with over 19 years of clear bra expertise.
- Do you want an installer who does not want to be professionally certified in the clear bra installation trade? No
- Do you want your paint protection film cut directly on the vehicle? Never
- Do you want a shop that just opened and will test their skills on your vehicle? Never
- You want the experience, skill and knowledge of the experienced certified professional installer to work on your vehicle.
- You want a shop they does clear bra installations exclusively and subcontract paint correction, tinting, PDR and other related services. Absolutely!
- Clearshield Protection has partnered with exclusive professional detailing and tint shops for a seamless work flow for our clients.
- Do not assume a shop in business for ten (10) years has ten (10) years of expertise in the installation of paint protection films.
- Most film manufacturers will not warranty their product unless the installation is performed by a manufacturer's certified installer.
2. Pattern Design: There are over fifteen (15) pattern companies on the market so compare apples to apples on your pattern coverage’s. Do it yourself (D.I.Y) patterns can be found on the Internet and are meant for the do-it-yourself-er not the professional installer. These patterns:
- Offer less coverage, come with multiple pieces and have several relief cuts. These attributes help to aid in the ease of installation but do nothing for the appearance and protection of the vehicle.
- Using the least amount of film is a priority for these patterns. This means separating a one-piece kit into several spliced pieces so it can be situated on the film to use less film to keep the price low. This may sound fine until you consider you are sacrificing protection, long term appearance (more edges, more unprotected areas, more areas to collect wax/dirt buildup - you are literally "cutting corners
- Lacks the ability to update or change the pattern to reflect the client’s needs such as edge wrapping and additional coverage options.

We are sure you will appreciate our high attention to detail, care and we, in turn, appreciate your reasonableness.
Q: Is Paint Protection Film (Clear Bra) really invisible? A : Paint Protection Film is over 99.5% clear and very difficult to see once it is properly applied to your vehicle. Most people will not even notice it’s on your vehicle. So yes, it is practically invisible.
Q: What is Ride Wrap? A : Ride Wrap is a custom bicycle frame and front fork protection kits. Self-healing film to protect your bike frame from scrapes, wear, and chips. Clearshield Protection is a certified installation partner with Ride Wrap. We cut all the patterns at our shop and do full installations. Gloss or matt/satin finishes are available.
Q: Will my automotive insurance cover the reapplication of Paint Protection Film kit in case of an accident? A : In most cases - Yes, we work directly with all major automotive insurance carriers and body shops to reinstall Paint Protection Film. Always check with your insurance carrier. We recommend you inform your insurance agent or body shop of the paint protection shop you want use for the estimate and re-installation of the Paint Protection Film. Take an active role and do not leave this up to the insurance agent or body shop. This ensures you get a professional installation.

Q: Can/should ceramic coatings be applied to the car before the film is installed?” A : We do NOT recommend the application of coatings (glass/ceramic) to the parts of the car that will be covered with paint protection film. The low surface energy provided by these products will cause adhesion problems both during installation and over the life of the product. In addition, it is worth noting that there is really no benefit to apply a coating to the paint before the film. So if a shop is suggesting this.. they are just padding their wallets and do not understand the consequences.
Q: Does the a vehicle's paint color require more maintenance and upkeep of the paint protection film than other colors? A : Unfortunately yes, light/white paint requires more attention to look good over the long term. Here's why - light/white paint shows film edges due to it's very nature - dirt is dark and this debris collects at the edges over time. The edges can be washed and quick detailers work great and is a perfect solution. The issue exacerbates itself over the long term. There are a few solutions; First we can wrap as many edges as possible, this hides the edge. This option would be a worthwhile additional expense. Second; full coverage hoods and fenders are a great option since edges would be wrapped..not like in a partial hood and partial fender scenario and a the third option is ceramic coating. I would always recommend a ceramic coating over the film.
Q: Why does my white vehicle look a few shades different under the Paint Protection Film? A : White vehicles with paint protection film inherently have what is called a prism effect taking place. This is best explained using an extreme example by taking 1/2" Plexiglas (similar to clear paint protection film) and lay on your hood. As you look through the Plexiglas/Lexan you notice a slight off white tint. The refracted light passes through the Plexiglas/Lexan (made up of 3 primary colors) with yellow (a primary color) tints your white paint every so lightly and background light around the vehicle causes a slight change in color. On a stark white vehicle, you can see less than 0.5% of color under certain light conditions. You want to seal the pores of the film with purpose made" sealants or ceramics to slow the absorption of the contaminants into the film.
Q: Why is Paint Protection Film better than vinyl black bras, sealants or even no protection? A : Rocks, insects, and debris can significantly show wear on your paints surface within a short period of time. Vinyl bras can catch dirt, debris and sand between the bra and paint surface and cause abrasive scratches, discoloration and fading. A properly installed clear bra can solve both of these problems and you will not increase drag (code name for increased gas mileage) over a vinyl bra. The best sealants and coatings will not protect the paint from stone chips and sand abrasion. Paint Protection Film will also increase the value of your vehicle when it comes time to sell or trade it.
Q: Will the paint fade differently under the Paint Protection Film? A : No. The Paint Protection Film allow the light to pass through film prevent the film from reacting to the sun’s rays and allows a certain amount of light to filter through the material to let the paint “age” with the rest of the vehicle.
Q: What parts can be protected by Paint Protection Film? A : Here are just a few ideas:
Q: How long does it take to install a standard kit (hood, fenders, mirrors and front bumper)? A : We recommend the vehicle be with us for a minimum of two (2) or three (3) full business days. We recommend the vehicle be dropped off the night before to allow the vehicle to washed/blow dried, clay/prepped and allows vehicle to cool completely down, time to remove and clean any parts being removed (emblems, lights etc.) and later reinstalled. The vehicle is parked in our “Certified” Clean Room to dry and cool down the engine. Dependent on the vehicle's color, coverage selections and wrapped edges we may require the vehicle longer period of time. Custom work may also take additional time. We never rush installations. We want the film to sit for a period of time to cure so we can insure all the edges are sealed and any parts removed to be reinstalled.
Q: Do I need to prep the vehicle prior to installation? A : No special prep is required. We do ask you completely wash and remove excessive dirt, debris or bugs for the vehicle so we can complete an overall inspection and the client can show any issues with the paint etc. Should you choose to have a third party polish or correct the paint prior to the paint protection film installation, please give attention to clean the polishing reside out of the crevasses (under headlights, where body panels meet, etc.) prior to installation. An additional charge may apply should the vehicle come in excessively dirty.
Q: Does your vehicle require polishing and/or paint correction prior to the installation? A : In most cases no, however allow us to inspect your paint finish and make recommendations. While most of what a paint correction will fix would be hidden by the film. Your paint only has a certain amount of clear coat to work with. Wouldn’t you want the most clear possible at that time? (removing film will likely marr the paint and may require a light correction). I would suggest no paint correction..unless the customer's wants protection on partial panels then I would say yes to those panels and save the money for correction when the film is removed. Understand most vehicles come right from the dealership with light washing swirls/marring, water etching and water spots already instilled to the vehicle's finish. Also poor correction could instill additional swirls by using dirty polishing pads or even the wrong type of pad to "wax" your car with. Yes, these imperfections can be removed and with proper wash techniques they can be kept to a minimum. Please understand you will NOT see imperfections such as light swirls and marring once the film is applied, however for car aficionado, knowing they are there and will just keep you up at night. Our professional can address these imperfections and remove them prior to the installation of the Paint Protection Film.
Q: What products does Clearshield Protection Services, Inc. use to protect the Paint Protection Film after the installation is complete? A : Each client leaves our facility with a sealed paint protection film. This film sealing step is often overlooked due to cost/time constraints by other shops. We expect the vehicle to leave our shop in better condition than when it came in.
Q: How do I care for the Paint Protection Film? A : Refer to “ Care & Maintenance” Tab
Q: How long will the Paint Protection Film last, when will I have to replace it? A : All too many times, I get asked, “how long is the warranty and what will the paint protection film look like after seven (7) to ten (10) years?” To answer this question I like to ask this simple question in return. If you were to go and buy a brand new car directly off the showroom floor, what will it look like 7 to 10 years later? He or she usually laughs and says “well I guess that depends on how well I take care of it”, which is exactly how I respond to their initial question regarding the Paint Protection Film product life.
Factors that influence how long Paint Protection Film will last:
Q: Does the Paint Protection Film yellow? A : With the new technology in urethane films and top coats it is possible to produce films which resist yellowing from the sun’s rays past the films warranty period. The length of time your film will stay crystal clear depends on how you maintain the film, cleaning products used, as well as environmental factors also play a key role in the aesthetic longevity of the film.
Paint Protection Films have two (2) main causes that cause yellowing:
Q: Does Paint Protection Film carry a warranty? A : Yes, all films come with a manufacturer and a Clearshield Protection Services, Inc. "Peace of Mind" Warranty. We stand behind our work to ensure complete customer satisfaction. We would not deliver a vehicle to a customer that we would not be absolutely satisfied on our own vehicles.
Q : I hear more and more about " Wear and Tear" Paint Protection Packages. What is this protection? A : This is basic coverage to protect your vehicle for the "When’s". A "WHEN" is not IF the scratch WILL happen but it's a matter of WHEN the scratch will occur? We protect your vehicle against the "When’s". This is "WHEN" you get a door edge chip, "WHEN" you scratch your trunk ledge, "WHEN" you scrap you heel on the painted door sill and "WHEN" your nails or ring scratch the paint inside the door handle zone. Or when you load something in your pickup truck and nick the paint on the bed ledge. We protect your vehicle against the "WHEN'S".
Q: Do you offer coverage on door edges and inside door cup areas? A : Yes, this is part of our 'Wear 'and Tear packages". The Paint Protection Film door edges look great over the bulky thick black, clear or chrome plastic covers. The film is invisible and allows the vehicle's color to shine through while protecting the door edge. Our door edges are custom cut to your door. Door Cup protection insures your ring; finger nails etc. do not scratch the inner painted door cup area. We offer extreme and ultimate protection options. 95% of the vehicles we film have at least the two front door cups protected.
Q: I scuff my heels on the door sills when I get in my vehicle. Do you offer coverage on door sills? A : Yes, this added protection is well worth the investment. This is part of our 'Wear and Tear package". We have also covered a few plastic sill pieces (Area at the lower door opening and carpet transition) and stainless steel sill plates from scratches and abrasion with our Paint Protection Films. We offer two options; 8 mil clear paint protection film or 13 mil embossed black vinyl.
Q: Do you offer coverage on the rear bumper trunk ledge area? A : Yes, many clients request this protection to insure their paint does not get scratched during install/removal of golf clubs, baggage etc. This is also part of our 'Wear and Tear package".
Q: Do you offer coverage on the trunk bed rails? A : Yes, many clients request this protection to insure their paint does not get scratched during install/removal baggage, golf club bags etc. This is also part of our 'Wear and Tear package" for trucks. We offer two options; 8mil clear paint protection film or 13 mil embossed black vinyl for that spray-on bedliner look.
Q: Can the Paint Protection Film be removed? A : Yes, The paint protection film is designed as a semi-permanent application and can be removed if desired. We would recommend professional removal. For removal of the film in good condition, simply heat the surface to approximately 170°F and begin by working a corner of the film with your fingernail. After you have enough film to hold onto, pull the film slowly away from the surface. If any adhesive remains, use automotive grade adhesive remover (We stock products in our shop.) After the film is removed, clean the paint with a professional polish followed by sealant/wax. Should new film need to be installed we use the same process as a new installation. There are other methods to film removal when the film degrades to the point where there is micro cracking, adhesive failure and discoloration.
Q: Can the Paint Protection Film be reinstalled over a painted repair? A : Most cases, yes, to clarify, to provide a proper estimate of the work involved, especially with repair work, we factor in the repair work itself, prep and the outcome. We want to inspect the vehicle, understand who did the repair, how it was performed and if the paint and body repair shop was notified the reinstallation of new film will be applied in the area of the repair. This ensures we can assess all factors to provide the best information and estimate to our clients. All paint repairs will require at least thirty (30) days to cure unless otherwise specified by the paint and body repair shop.
As for paint touchup - chip repair. There type of repairs do not have any chemical/physical bond to the paint. So there is always a possibility of lifting the paint plug. We try to avoid this be having the client document where this work was performed so can work gingerly in the area of the repair.
We always have the client sign a waiver for respray/touch ups.
Q: Will Paint Protection Film damage my factory paint? A : It should not. Our Paint Protection Films are designed to protect your paint, not damage it. OEM’s (original equipment manufacturer) approve the use of these products and many new vehicles have film installed at the factory to protect lower doors panels, lower truck beds, behind mud flaps etc.
Q: What is "Urban" Paint Protection? A : Since our client's awareness has increased on the benefits of Paint Protection Films. Many clients are interested in additional protection for doors, rear bumpers and quarter panels etc. This additional protection (urban protection) is required for the day to day parking at malls etc. where the vehicle could get scratched or rubbed from the side or rear of the vehicle. This is great protection for bumper to bumper rub damage.
Q: Do you offer Paint Protection coverage on the rear bumper? A : Yes, many consider this “urban” protection. On many higher end vehicles we offer a rear bumper protection. However, more and more clients have requested rear bumper protection so we are seeing more patterns available. We can also offer custom installations.
Q: Can I see a Paint Protection film edge where the film stops? A : The Paint Protection Film is about 8 thousandths of an inch thick including the adhesive layer. A slight edge is barely visible at certain lighting angles. We recommend bikini cuts for the hood/fenders which further enhance the invisibility of the edge as well as the wrapped/rolled edges. There is a balance between optimum protection and edge visibility and cost. For the discriminant client, we recommend full hood and fender protection along with the front bumper and wrapped/rolled edges.
We always recommend edge wrapping or rolling edge under the part:
Q: I just can't live with the Paint Protection Film edge on the hood and fenders; What are my options? A : For those who require the ultimate in protection and/or do not want see an edge across the hood/fenders, we offer full hood and fender coverage. As an option we offer a full hood coverage with partial fenders which in many cases resolves the film edge issue for many clients while staying within your budget. We are one of a few installation facilities in Florida which have the capability to use up to 72" master rolls on our computer cutters for full hood designs.
Q: Who makes patterns and which ones should I use for my vehicle? A : Always review the pattern designs and pattern options with the installer to determine your protection coverage. There are many design pattern companies; Core,XPEL, Nano Fusion, FirstCut, Digital Designs, Precisioncut and Paintshield and others. The top pattern companies, hands down, are Core and XPEL. The differences between pattern design houses are: client service, quality, fitment, patterns offered and coverage protection - number of pieces to complete the coverage and ability to offer pattern options. Many patterns do not quite fit right, come in multiple pieces and relief cuts which are simpler and less time consuming to install (less installed cost) however the drawbacks are numerous: increased film edges, butted film at relief cuts which offer poor protection and sub-par fitment - gaps and less protection. These are all laser cut at our facility.
Q: I have an aftermarket bumper, hood, can you cover this? A : Typically yes, we offer custom installations. We can develop a pattern specific for your coverage needs. We would need to see the project to determine the viability and to provide an estimate.
Q: Will there be a two-tone effect when the film is ever removed? A : No, the latest paint protection films are UV stabilized and new paints today offer greater UV protection so the underlying paint will not fade. The unprotected paint as well as the paint protection films should be regularly washed and waxed/sealed and there would be no indication that film was ever installed. That being said, we may recommend single or multiple stage paint correction to remove any micro marring, swirling etc. on the unprotected paint to match the superior gloss of the paint finish under the removed film. We offer these services to our clients during the removal process. We also sell removal products should the client which to perform the removal and polishing.
Q: Can I have the Paint Protection Film installed on my repainted (respray) bumper and/or hood, etc. ? A : Yes, paint curing time depends on numerous factors, including the type of paint, the temperature catalyst, the temperature reducer and the type of drying method that was used. We always recommend using a professional body shop and let them know you plan to install Paint Protection Film. All repainted parts should be removed from the vehicle to ensure the complete part is fully cleaned, keyed and primed and base coat applied in accordance to OEM requirements. Factory finishes are baked onto the surface at 350+ degrees which allows for quicker installation of the film. Repainted surfaces can be baked only at 150 degrees to prevent damage to the vehicles components.
The minimum time we would recommend having Paint Protection Film installed after painting is thirty (30) days. This is to ensure any residual gassing out is complete alleviating the risk of bubbles forming under the film. Some body shops recommend up to ninety (90) days for full paint cure. If a vehicle is in an environment that is cooler than 55 degrees F, the curing process essentially stops and will not resume until the temperature goes above the 55 degrees F. If the paint is not fully cured, and film is applied, outgassing may occur under the film and ultimate film lifting and failure.
Q: I have a few paint chips can you apply the film to these areas? A : Yes - we recommend at least twenty four (24) hours for these areas to cure. Touched-up chip areas have no firm paint adhesion and there is always some risk the paint plug may not adhere in the repaired area while the film is being installed. That being said, we have been successful with a few special techniques to prevent paint lift on chip repaired areas. We make no guarantee the paint plug will not be moved however we make every effort to install the film over these locations. For the best results, let us inspect the paint before the chips are repaired and client should provide a map or photos of the repaired areas. Should the film be installed over the paint plug successfully, when the film is removed the paint plug may not stay adhered.
Q: What about purchasing a paint protection kit on Ebay or another on-line internet site? A : There are $20.00 vinyl kits sold on eBay and other internet sites which are not Paint Protection Film - it's vinyl. These products are not designed to stop rocks or road debris. They will not hold up long term, no warranty and in many cases will damage (bonds to paint) and fades the paint similar to a vinyl bra. Many sites sell paint protection films with inferior patterns which have poor fitment, alignment and many relief cuts for ease of install - this saves on film and makes it easy to install while sacrificing coverage. You usually get what you pay for. Refer to question below.
Q: Can I install a Paint Protection Film kit myself? A : Yes and No. Many DYI'ers are able to install flat pieces without much difficulty however 98% of the kits, a one-time installer would likely ruin the film. For a professional installation, we recommend your kit be installed by a Certified Professional Installer. A Certified Professional Installer would also provide a manufacturer and installation warranty and customize the film coverage for a cleaner installation. The application of paint protection films involves explicit preparation of the car's surface, under proper conditions, for precise placement and flawless fitment. Most importantly, you will have a manufacturer and installation warranty, plus "piece of mind" knowing the kit was installed properly with no damage to your paint.
1. Many online companies may mislead the customer in thinking they have a manufacturer's warranty. Only a Certified Professional Installer can offer a manufacturer's warranty. What is a Certified Professional Installer? This is an installer who has taken manufacturer's technical training and usually has the ability to computer cut kits in house. The training includes detailed courses, a written and hands on exam to insure their ability to install the film properly and understands the properties of the specific films and the designer’s pattern nuances.
2. Many online companies will locate a Certified Professional Installer in your area AFTER you purchase the Paint Protection Film kit from them. A word of caution: Many cases a Certified Professional Installer will NOT install a mail order or a precut kit, and if they elect to will not offer any warranty on the installation or product. Should any part not fit or become unusable, the customer will be liable for the replacement piece. Always check to insure you have a Certified Professional Installer who will install a mail order kit before you buy it online.
3. Who manufacturer's paint protection film? There are many manufacturers’ which claim to have paint protection film, or call their product paint protection film, which in fact are not. Some do not have manufacturers labeling on the backing material and many products are just a vinyl material which is an inferior product and not designed or tested for impact protection. Many of these products look a likes can cause paint problems, i.e., adhesive bonding to paint, hard removal, discoloration of paint under the film, fading under the film. Always use genuine paint protection film which has undergone extensive testing.
4. What is the age of the paint protection film? If you purchase a kit online likely you will not know the age of the film. Old film can lead to film lifting and poor adhesion. Lifting and poor adhesion are not covered under any manufacturer's’ warranty so the installer bears this risk, or passes the risk on to the customer. This is one of the reasons why a Certified Installers may NOT install mail order precut kits.
5. Has the film been properly stored? Improper storage of paint protection film may lead to defects in the adhesive which leads to poor installation. This is another reason why a Certified Installer may NOT install mail order or precut kits.
6. Has the precut kit been cut with an overused/dull blade, improper cutting settings used, improper blade depth or not weeding directly after the kit was cut? All these conditions could lead to the removal of adhesive at the kit’s cut edge and may lead to poor adhesion on the painted surface. An improperly weeded kit may also lead to poor adhesion at the edge of the film. This is another reason why a Certified Installer may NOT install mail order or precut kits.
7. Paint protection kit fit properly? Many internet companies offer poor kit designs since they kits at no cost to the seller. Internet companies sell kits with numerous pieces (piece-meal, so the installation is easier) the downside is there are more edges and relief cuts which lead to increased film visibility, less overall coverage and does not have a clean factory look. These kits use several pieces so the pieces can be positioned to use the least amount of film during the plotting of the kit. Sounds good until you consider they are sacrificing quality, fitment and overall look of the film by literally "cutting corners". A kit that fits improperly leads to poor alignment hurts the paint protection industry as a whole, and worst of all, a disappointed customer.
8. Does the kit offer adequate paint protection coverage? Many kits offer limited coverage, less material being used, charge less and offer no additional coverage options. As a Certified Professional Installer we cut our kits onsite offering the client various options (extended coverage’s, wrapping, etc.) which are not available through mail-order companies.
Conclusion: Each of these points is a liability issue for the installer. Many Certified Professional Installers do not want to risk their reputation on kits provided by the client. When the installer has control of the product, coverage, coverage options, kit fitment and his ability to cut the kit in house, the Certified Installation Facility can offer the best installation and fitment for the client. The client loses if they install the kit improperly or have a non-certified installer perform the installation… in the end; the client is not pleased with the outcome.
Q: Can you apply Paint Protection Film to plastic? A : Yes and No. This is a case by case basis. Plastics have a very low surface energy which inhibit adhesive from holding onto the substrate. Stop by the shop and we can apply a sample piece.
Q: Can you apply Paint Protection Film to glass? A : Yes. We cover cell phones, smart and tablet screens and commercial glass counter tops.
Q: Can you apply Paint Protection Film to chrome? A : Yes. We have paint protection film which will work on chrome plated plastic and metal parts. Stop by the shop and we can apply a sample piece.
Q: Can you apply Paint Protection Film stainless steel? A : Yes. The film looks great on all brushed, polished aluminum and stainless steel parts. Stop by the shop and we can apply a sample piece.
Q: I have heard some vehicles are offered in a painted matte finish - is there paint protection film for painted matte finishes? A : Yes. We call this “stealth/matt film". This film is perfect for clear bra protection over painted matte finishes, matte vinyl raining stripes and matte vehicle wraps. The stealth film protects without gloss and is great for race cars, hot rods, customs and exotic factory paints. We can even apply to gloss paint for a retro Matt look.
Q: What about wax build up along the seam and how can I avoid it? A : There are many professional coatings which do NOT leave residue, so this issue can be eliminated. We can assist in the proper selection of waxes/sealants. We recommend a light wipe movement in the direction of the edge with an automotive grade micro fiber. We recommend not waxing "into" the seams but 90 degrees across them. Never apply a concentrated rubbing action at the seam edges as this may groove the paint/gel coat and would be unnoticed until the film is removed. We provide each of our clients a Maintenance & Care Flyer with specific recommendations and products to use on the films. We also offer wrapped edges to avoid wax/debris buildup and ceramic coating application.
Q: What do the VW and Land Rover Certified OEM Installer Logos on our website mean? A : Volkswagen and Land Rover have OEM (original equipment manufacturer) paint protection packages offered via the dealerships and are installed either by employees at the dealership or contracted out to a paint protection film installation facility. Clearshield Protection Services, Inc. completed numerous hands on training with exams to qualify as a VW and Land Rover Certified OEM Installer for these OEM's.
Q: Should I purchase Paint Protection Film from my car dealership? A : While buying products directly from the dealership at the time of vehicle purchase has its benefits, i.e., the costs can be included in the financing, some believe it is the only way to obtain the product, they will get a warranty, some believe it is just easier, and finally, some believe the cost will be about the same so they might as well just get it installed at the time of vehicle purchase. While many of these reasons are correct, here are some issues to consider:
Q: Lexus, Toyota and Audi offer Paint Protection Film kits on their new vehicles. Who installs these kits? A : Dealerships usually offer limited coverage paint protection kits and are quite costly for the coverage offered. If the vehicle requires installation we perform installations for these manufacturers.
Q: The standard Paint Protection Kit (partial hood/fenders, mirrors and front bumper) is too expensive for my vehicle, Are there any other options? A: Please keep in mind that Paint Protection kits are a small investment compared to repainting the vehicle or the cost of a new vehicle. The protection will truly pay for itself.
Q: Would it been less expensive to repaint the front of the vehicle” than install a clear bra? A: Many vehicle owners believe the cost of a repaint is less than the installation of a clear bra. This is just not true and still be able maintain the original vehicle look, fit and resale value. Let me address two (2) scenarios:
1. You will not save any money for a professional repaint which includes removal of parts off the vehicle to be prepared, resprayed and reinstalled plus during your ownership your vehicle will have paint chips, debris scratches etc. You will also need to drop your vehicle off for two (2) to five (5) days plus address the risk of other damage or issues which may arise during the removal, respray and re installation process. e.i. over spray, scratches, rubs, dents, holograms in the paint, buffing swirls, poor fitment of reinstalled parts, paint defects etc. Most non OEM paint jobs you can easily tell, because of lines, thickness of paint, paint swirls, defects etc. unless you use an amazing restoration paint job and this option will cost lots more than clear bra protection.
2. You may save some money if you repaint the bumper/hood on the vehicle. This is not the recommended method for a professional repaint and many body shops may not warranty this type of work. The paint will not hold up as well since the prep and respray does not cover the complete part (edges, hidden painted section, etc.). Upon inspection, you and others would know the vehicle was repainted leaving a prospective buyer weary not knowing if the vehicle was in an accident or just repainted due to frontal stone chips/ bug damage so you have a reduced resale value of your vehicle. Also some owners will bypass the insurance company and repaint a vehicle - out of pocket so no one will know the vehicle was repainted or possibly even repaired AND the work may not show up on a Car Fax report.
Conclusion: New paint jobs still won't protect against chips. Do you want the risk of mismatched color bumper or any part of their car resprayed and de-value the vehicle. Paint Protection Film is not about repainting it's about preserving the original finish and to prevent rock chips along the way so the vehicle looks good and you maintain your resale value. Do you want to purchase your next used vehicle knowing it was repainted or would you continue looking for one you know was NOT repainted – for whatever reason?
Q: I hear the term orange peel, what does this mean? A : Orange peel is a certain kind of finish on a painted surfaces. The texture resembles the bumpy surface of the skin of an orange (fruit) hence the name. Most automotive finishes have some level of orange peel. We offer grades of film with different levels of orange peel to best match your application
Orange peel varies from film to film. In general, the amount of orange peel is proportionate with the texture of the backing liner however there are films which have a textured top coat. We take into consideration the amount of orange peel naturally present in the paint on the car to recommend a film to our client. A vehicle with perfectly smooth show quality paint, you will want a film that has no orange peel of its own. If your paint some orange peel or lighter in color, then you probably won't notice the orange peel in the film. How you drive, your local climate, paint color and budget will also affect the film choice. We will work to determine the best film for your needs.
Q: Can Paint Protection Film be applied over graphics? A : The Paint Protection Film will not interfere with vinyl or painted graphics, pinstriping and is designed to match the gloss levels of today's automotive factory clear coat paint systems, providing virtually invisible protection. When the paint protection film is removed, the underlying graphic may lift (many times the graphic is unaffected) during the film removal process. Some patterns have “with” and “without” decals patterns should the client request this option. Examples are patterns with and without coverage are the racing stripes on a 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 and the Ford Mustang 302
We now offer "Matte" Stealth Paint Protection Film for matte surfaces - this is also great protection for the matte racing stripes.
Q: Can I just use a vinyl bra to protect my paint? A : Vinyl auto bras are good way to protect your vehicle – short term. What many fail to realize is when using a vinyl bra, it’s essential that you do not leave it on for long periods of time for a number of reasons: the paint will fade underneath the bra, dirt, dust and sand slowly accumulate under the bra and slowly sand and abrade the paint. When water is added into the equation, the moist dirt can quickly lead to oxidation, mildew, and all sorts of other unwanted paint problems. The best option for the automotive enthusiast is to have a clear bra paint protection film. The film does not rub up against your vehicle, it prevents damage from rocks, insects, paint fade and does not threaten your paint, it's removable and follows the contours of your vehicle so the vehicle looks great!. Plus it improves your gas mileage over the wind resistance of a black vinyl bra.
Q: Can I just use a magnetic bra to protect my paint? A : Magnetic sign material is NOT recommended for horizontal painted surfaces which can reach temperatures of 150 degrees or higher. Long-term use of magnet materials on painted surfaces frequently exposed to sunlight (such as vehicles) can result in uneven fading of the surface similar to vinyl bras and damage to the paint. The magnetic bras need to be removed often to clean and reapply paint sealant. Magnetic bras should not be installed on newly painted surfaces. The material does not conform to fenders and nor does it stick to bumpers or aluminum parts. You can learn more about magnetic bras by goggling: "care and maintenance of magnetic signs". You will also come to the conclusion magnetic bra is not a good option for protection your investment. The best option for the automotive enthusiast is to have a "clear bra" paint protection film. The film does not rub up against your vehicle, it prevents damage from rocks, insects, paint fade and does not threaten your paint, it's removable and follows the contours of your vehicle so the vehicle looks great.
Headlight Protection Film - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Can you cover my headlights, blinkers and fog lights with the Paint Protection Film? A : Yes, clear headlight protection will not diminish the lights output and will not alter your vehicles appearance – in fact it will make your vehicle look better since you will not have weathering and abrasion taking place on the lens surfaces. If you are a frequent freeway driver, the protection is a necessity. We have lens patterns (headlight, blinkers, fogs etc.) for most vehicles. We also provide "headlight" specific films to protection against breakage and sand abrasion while adding high clarity and scratch resistance.
Q: Can Paint Protection Films protect headlight lens from weathering? A : Yes, in a recent test by a film manufacturer installed paint protection film on a set of new SUV headlights and was removed after 20 months in Florida. The film removed and the plastic surface was in perfect, like-new condition. However, where the film did not cover the surface (near the edges), there was clear evidence that the unprotected surface had already begun to deteriorate from weathering. This shows the value of the film to prevent aging of exposed plastic lens surfaces.
In cases where the headlight surfaces are already fogged, hazed or crazed from weathering, the installation of Paint Protection Film restores the surface to extreme clarity, improving headlight brilliance and focus. Many clients have the film installed on their headlights to avoid having to buy and install new expensive headlights.
Q: Can Paint Protection Films protect aftermarket lens? A : Yes. Depending on the light output (bulb wattage which directly corresponds to heat output) and the type of light housing we would recommend headlight specific material options. Our personal vehicle has 100 watt and 130 watt fog and driving lights with the 30 mil clear headlight protection film and looks like-new condition after 5 years. Please understand we will not warranty headlight material against overheating with high output bulbs or aftermarket bulbs.
Marine Protection Films - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Can we use Paint Protection Film for marine applications? A : Yes, Great for bow protections and rub/abrasion areas. The film does not adhere to marine board or materials with a textured surface. We do not recommend any films on walk area zones since the films are slippery or areas which are submerged in water all the time. Fresh and saltwater environments can wreak havoc on any surface; therefore we offer no material or installation warranty for marine applications. Paint protection film will offer better protection than not having any film at all. We also offer our thicker clear 30 film for special uses.
Underwater (submerged) applications: There may be microbial growth over time which can penetrate the adhesive layer. Should microbial growth not be an issue, the film will offer abrasion protection for underwater (submerged) applications. We recommend paint protection film for hull protection limited to boats on trailers and personal watercraft.
Above the waterline applications: The film will provide protection both inside and outside the vessel. Also consider protection on your trailer.
Q: Is there special maintenance and care for Paint Protection Films used in marine applications? A : For all marine applications we recommend a ceramic coating and a fresh water rinse after each use. There are no set recommendations on frequency of sealing the film.
- Hood: Rock chips show most noticeably on the front of the hood.
- Fenders: This protection usually matches up with the hood coverage and protects the leading fender edges.
- Front bumper: Forward facing painted surfaces are most likely to be damaged by flying rocks/debris.
- Side mirrors: The mirrors catch a lot of damaging stones and insects.
- Headlights/blinkers/fog lights: Headlights are getting to be VERY expensive to replace. Protect against breakage, sand blasting and yellowing.
- Roof edge: The leading edge of the roof also gets hit often by high-flying debris, bugs etc.
- A - pillars: Sides of the windshield often get hit often by debris and bugs.
- Trunk ledge: Have you ever scratched up your rear bumper putting luggage, golf clubs etc. into the trunk? Clear bra is the answer.
- Door sill plates - protection against your shoes/boots rubbing and scratching the paint.
- Full rear bumper: urban protection - Protection against parking lot rubs from other vehicles and shopping carts.
- Full side doors: urban protection - protection for handbags, shopping cart rubs etc.
- Door handle inserts: Protection against fingernails, rings, or keys which scratch the paint...but not with clear bra protection.
- Door edge guards: Protection from door edge chipping plus it's clear! No black or chrome edging standing out like a sore thumb.
- Tire-splash/rocker panel zones: Often overlooked area for needed protection. The bottom section of the fenders can be damaged by your tires throwing rocks up.
- Wear-n-tear on the vehicle.
- How often is the vehicle washed?
- How often is the Paint Protection Film cleaned? (removal of bugs, sap etc.)
- How often is the Paint Protection Film sealed/waxed/ceramic coated?
- Geographic climate
- Garaged or not?
- Type and manufacturer of the film
- Does the film have an applied ceramic coating?
Q: Does the Paint Protection Film yellow? A : With the new technology in urethane films and top coats it is possible to produce films which resist yellowing from the sun’s rays past the films warranty period. The length of time your film will stay crystal clear depends on how you maintain the film, cleaning products used, as well as environmental factors also play a key role in the aesthetic longevity of the film.
Paint Protection Films have two (2) main causes that cause yellowing:
- Inclusions in the film. Tiny particles of diesel smoke, air pollution, road grime, pollen and the like can become trapped in the pores of the film and cause the urethane to look as if it has changed colors. In fact, the urethane is still the same as it always was; you are just seeing the color of the trapped particles.
- Certain types of petroleum distillates are present in some car polishes, cleaning agents and such can cause urethane the urethane pores to discolor. Contrary to the information on the forums - do not use Plexus on the paint protection film. This product has proven to yellow the film over time.
- Avoid waxes or polishes which contain dyes or petroleum distillates. Use yellow, blues, blacks and reds etc. dyed products fill in the pores of the film and discolor the films.
- We recommend the owners of white (light) vehicles with paint protection film should avoid brushless car washes due to the type of chemicals used and have edges wrapped to reduce the edge lines.
- The best preventative maintenance is to seal/coat the Paint Protection Film with approved products.
- Overall installation looks cleaner and less visible
- Much easier to wash and wax
- Keep debris/dirt/wax from collecting on the edges
- I recommend a ceramic coat application for ease of cleaning.
- Many dealerships try to install film with their current wash/wax employees.
- The workmanship may not meet the clients’ quality standards.
- Dealerships like to subcontractor the work.
- Dealerships use least cost films for maximum profits.
- Dealerships use standard kit designs. The kits are preset, no coverage options and offer minimal coverage.
- Dealerships may not provide a manufacturer’s warranty card or offer an installation warranty.
- Dealerships may charge an absorbent cost for the clear bra (knowing the clear bra will be included in your vehicles' purchase.)
- Dealerships want to get the job done quickly and as inexpensively as possible in order to get the car out the door.
- Refer to question: Why is there a difference in cost between installation facilities?
- Custom protection options are not available at the dealerships.
- Your vehicle will maintain its beauty for years with no chips rubs abrasions and will protect your paint from the bug acids.
- There is peace of mind knowing your vehicle will not look like it’s been through a gravel pit.
- You will have increased resale value (most vehicle wear-n-tear occurs in the front of the vehicle and in the driver’s seat area) Protect those areas.
